Barracuda Email Protection

Barracuda Email Protection recently introduced improved detection efficacy of email threats. There are three major improvements to Barracuda’s ability to detect email threats:

Full URL Classifier - This feature complements the previous Link Protection with machine learning and a variety of threat intelligence data to identify malicious URLs that have never been seen before, allowing Barracuda solutions to identify new malware or phishing URLs, feed this intelligence to Barracuda Real-Time Systems (BRTS) and block these attacks in the future. Link Protection will continue to safeguard URLs on click using data from BRIS and other sources. This is now available to Barracuda Email Gateway Defense users.

Detection of attacks via Google translate links - There has been an increasing number of email attacks that use Google Translate service. Attackers use the Google Website Translate feature to send the Google hosted URLs embedded in an email that lead to phishing websites. While Google fails to translate the website, it allows users to click on the link and view the original website. These attacks are difficult to detect since they originate from a reputable source. We have now added this detection to Barracuda Impersonation Protection users.

Detection of image attacks - Attackers are using images, without any text, in their email phishing attacks. These images often include links or a call back phone number that lead to phishing. Since these images are not attachments that Barracuda Impersonation Protection can access, we have introduced a classifier that looks at the image context, the subject of the emails, and combined with sender stats. Barracuda Impersonation Protect can now make a determination whether the email is an attack, or not. Since rolling out this new classifier, most of the attacks identified have been fake invoices. This classifier only looks at emails that contain an image but no text in the email body.
